Not me in a week…..Yep, off to big O again!
It was more a spur of the moment thing, and I didn’t really care who was or wasn’t going to join me. I happened to have a week’s company holiday in June so I thought why not google the cost of airfares to Okinawa during this period. Low and behold, rainy off-peak season tickets were available for the same cost as a fancy schmancy steak and craft beer back home. Expensive fares or not I would still have gone. Money can always be made but time not. I also just needed a mini break from everyone and everything, and what better way to have a hard reset than injecting that Okinawan goodness in ya.
Let me divert a little here but for the past few years, I have been witnessing a family member mentally rot away week by week. The dementia demon has rapidly seized their mind and who knows how long remains. No empathy needed - far from it, but this has made me ponder more about life. We’re born into this world, then we die. If you were told you only had a year to live, you’re most likely to spend a good chunk of thought on how you chose to spend it yeah? Yep, time to build that home dojo you’ve always wanted! How about if it were only a couple of months or a week left? Yep, time to slurp all the ramen your guts allow! What if you were to be “see-ya-latered” from this world tomorrow? Surely, you’d realise what you need or want to do there and then?
Often, I feel like I think like a 60+ year old contemplating my final decades on earth – maybe it’s because I’m surrounded by them in the dojo😊 And when I hear my Uncle Peter in his 70's mull over buying a cucumber sandwich or a deluxe hamburger with smashed avo.....it's like dude let's be real, how many more years you got? Stop being such a cheap prick! Life happens in the blink of an eye - Try not to blow this “blink” that has been given to us and do what it is you've always wanted to do.
