A year has passed since the death of one of our sensei in Okinawa. Loved by everyone, and worshipped by the karate tourists, Okuma Sensei was a humble man who didn’t seek fame or fortune, just a person who enjoyed the simple things in life and the company of others.
When he spoke, you listened – that deep growly tone of voice that made you sweat like a dog outside a Chinese restaurant each time you had to perform kata in front of him. Beneath that frightening layer, was the kindest and funniest gentleman you could ever meet. Never a dull moment and always sharing a joke was Okuma Sensei. The countless chats about everything and anything were always a highlight, especially after a few drinks. If we could only go back in time to relive them again…
Hopefully this past year we have shared whatever knowledge we gained through Okuma Sensei to our students, and one day for them to do the same. Dearly missed, but never forgotten.
