Accreditation, Ranks, Dan Certificates, and more pieces of paper....

Today while I was having lunch with a colleague, he received a phone call from a prestigious Brisbane high school which his son was enrolled in. They were asking for his viola and piano accreditation in order to be able to join the school band. What would have happened if he never had any certification and was just simply a naturally talented or self-taught musician?

This got me thinking…… In karate and other martial arts, gradings are usually carried out in order to determine the ‘level’ or ‘rank’ of the practitioner. However, to simply be awarded such rank does it really mean you are at that level? At the end of the day, it is simply a piece of paper with a number on it. Just look at all the unfit, overweight instructors these days who may have the gift of the gab, but can they really ‘do’? Should people really be judged or judge based on a certificate?
