When people think of karate dojos, an image of a large area (probably in a hall or warehouse) with up to date facilities would probably spring to mind. Anything less would almost equate to an inferior karate school right? When acquaintances hear the size of our dojo is comparable to that of their garages, a look of unfathomability transpires. But how much space is really needed to train effectively? One key difference between Okinawan and Japanese karate is that in dojos around Okinawa, the student often takes turns performing kata individually or in small groups. The obvious reason which may not be so to many is that personalised correction can be provided by the instructor/s, otherwise not possible if carried out in large groups simultaneously. In addition, a strong sense of intimacy and ambiance can be felt. The next time you practice your kata alone, take note of actual space required.....not that much huh :) Happy training everyone!
Does dojo size really matter?
