It has already been 1 ½ years since changing industries because of Covid. Who would have thought I’d be working in the creative field where dealing with artists, interior designers, and filthy rich clients on a regular basis would be daily ritual? So today (actually, every week) I came across a rather ill-mannered client whose word choice and manner of speech was even too offensive for the thickest of the thick-skinned. Since I rarely take much to heart (including this fiend), it didn’t personally bother me, but I did feel sorry that my co-workers were affected by his words.
It just got me drifting off thinking about what would happen in a commercial dojo environment. Would the sensei have to bite their tongue since the customer is paying X amount of dollars and contributing to their early retirement? Or would they have the balls to stand up for humanity's sake and tell such characters to speak in a polite way?
We’re blessed we don’t have to deal with such people in our dojos. If anything, the complete opposite. A sanctuary, a real-life escape from the evil jackasses out there taking up space on this earth. Running a commercial dojo or not, customer or vendor, fat or thin – a little courtesy will go a long way.
